Ensiferum is probably the most followed metal band among the Folk category and has gained a lot of attention due to the "fashion" of folk among the scene. Despite many clichés associated with the genre as a whole, Ensiferum does show once again that they are on top of the game. Yes, even without Jari.

It seems to be a trend to add folk elements into metal music these days, so Falchion is no pioneer really, but still sounds great and not too common. So if you are into this kind of fusion and have not heard of Falchion, it's time to find out more about them.

Whether Petri Lindroos filled in Jari's role in the band well enough or not is still a controversy among fans of the band, though I personally have no problem with it.

The second and last album of Ensiferum with Jari Maenppaa, but also a worthy successor to their debut.

Ensiferum's eponymous debut is probably considered as the best of Pagan/Viking/Blackened Folk (what ever you call it really) album by general consensus.

True... a lot of bands these days add folk elements into their music. The additional of female vocals is also not new even in the Gothenburg/Melodeath scene, but Slania is really among the best releases of 2008 and other than great song writing, I blame it on their performance, though not on the skill level as I'm sure many bands have great talent, but I mean performance with soul. Can't miss this if you consider yourself a Gothenburg Metal fan!

When listening to Suidakra, there's plenty of Gaelic folk passages in their Melodic Death Metal style, so it came a bit of a surprise when I found out later that these guys come from Germany. So if you like Folk Metal and Melodeath or just like Melodeath but want something different, try Suidakra.

Alestorm has grown rather popular in recent years and it is not surprising as they have a distinct sound that some label as Pirate Metal. Those galloping shanty tunes is easy to sing along to, but others may find it a bit too "easy".

As depicted by the cover art, the lastest output by the Faroese band is all about Vikings battling Christianity. As usual, you'll feel like grabbed by the hair to join their quest while listening to them.

Both the cover and album title is screaming out loud the band's musical/lyrical themes are based on Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings. If you like ethereal female vocals with some a breath of fresh air in your Symphonic Metal, this is the deal.

To me, Battlelore's stand out point is the dreamy female vocals. However, the rest of the band, including the harsh vocals that gives the music a sharper edge all do a professional job as well, combining with the interesting blend of folk ambiences, Evernight is widely considered as Battlelore's more accomplished works (till 2008 anyway as The Last Alliance is even better).
